What needs to be done for purebred dogs.
What
I’ve Learned From Facebook
Someone on Facebook was talking about how much they enjoyed
their dog show weekend with friends, when another person responded by saying,
in essence, how much we all love our dogs and how can we be anything but united
in that love for all things Havanese. On
the success of a different Havanese in the show ring, another person remarked about
how we really are guardians of the breed.
That got me thinking. That
guardianship applies just as strongly to the health of our breed as it does to
the way our dogs look.
That's why I am part of the UCDavis Havanese Genetic Diversity Program. This is a very easy way to enable us to ensure that the sire and dam are unrelated. It protects not only the potential litter and puppies, but also the genepool of the breed as a whole.
To me diversity is no longer an issue. Every breeding facility in the world has come to that conclusion and dogs are no different.
The next post will explain how all that works.

I think Miss Molly should have saved this for Holloween!
